New hosting for my photos – SmugMug

By Stuart

Howdy all,
Firstly I apologise for being away, I have been sick as a dog and have also had a death in my partner’s family. Anyhoo, onto the topic for today.

I have been hunting around for somewhere that I can host my photography works (and also do a little e-commerce as well, such as selling digital downloads of my photos), while at the same time integrating with Adobe Lightroom (to make my life easy).

After playing around with SmugMug.com for a few days I have made my pick. Although it is a little expensive, I have managed to get my hands on a 50% off code so that is a massive bonus as well because I can now get a Pro account at a pretty decent price.

You can see the new gallery as I am putting it together at http://gallery.eccentricreality.com, if you bare with me while I play with the templates and such, I will try to work it all around to make it look pretty.

Anyhoo, if you are interested in somewhere that can host your images with a LOT of great features (most importantly… Adobe Lightroom Integration), SmugMug is my current pick.

If you think you might get an account and want to help me pay for my new digital camera, there are SmugMug ads that will display at the bottom of this site every so often, if not, tis all good. But as that is not the aim of this post I am not going to throw an affiliate link in (unless you guys really ask me to). ;)

Anyhoo, has anyone else used SmugMug? I am rather curious, if not, what do you use for your photo hosting (professional or otherwise)?

Stuart ;)

I have been using SmugMug for my professional site for sales for almost a year now and I love it! Once you get used to customizing things you’ll see how perfect it is especially if you’re hoping to sell your prints.

Hi Jenera,
That is awesome to hear, I have to admit I am looking forward to when they bring in sales of framed pictures like RedBubble.

I am going to have to do a lot of playing, ideally I would *love* the site to fit in with this theme but that is going to be a lot of work LOL.

I’ve been with them for 3-4 years also. Very reliable service and I they have the best looking/working galleries out there. You can customize to match your existing site and then link to it; that’s what I do and it sure beats trying to program and maintain your own galleries, especially if you are updating all the time. I tried that for a while and it was driving me nuts. They make it really easy to share images via links in forums & blogs, too. Haven’t tried their printing since I do my own, but should be as good as any and they’re adding new capabilities all the time. Don’t know if they have any plans to go into the matting and framing like some services though.

Hi Mark,
I do remember reading somewhere that they are considering bringing that in, this coming year (so fingers crossed).

I have to say I don’t think so far I have heard a bad word about it. I do agree with you that it is an ideal solution that you do not have to constantly go and update.

I do have to say it would be great to have an automated backup option for it tho, that is something that I feel is is missing (you can order a DVD, I would just like to be able to rsync a backup off site).

Glad to see your back and feeling better. Happy New Year by the way! I looked into several different gallery hosting sites and I settled on Flickr because of it’s popularity. I have heard lots of good things about Smugmug too.

Hi AVCr8teur,
Thanks so much and a BIIIIIG Happy New Year to you as well! ;)

It is funny I was looking at Flickr, the things that really sold it for me on SmugMug was the ability to sell my images and downloads. So I guess if I really get into doing professional stuff that will help me a lot.

Hope life is treating you well.
Stuart ;)
