At a recent celebration night that Canon Australia was holding (celebrating 50 years since the first Canon SLR Camera) I was once again offered the chance to borrow a camera to have a play with and review if I wish, which is is a Canon EOS 5D MKII. While we are waiting for one of those to become available I have had the Canon Legria HFS11 High Definition Video Camera on loan for a few weeks to have a play with. I am currently in the process of reworking all the sample footage and will upload this along with the review sometime next week (I hope).

However in the mean time I wanted to let you know that I recently won a competition Canon Australia was running. On visiting the EOS website a few weeks back I noticed they were running a survey where you would win prizes. At the end you had to state in 25 words or less what you loved about the Canon EOS Community. I cant remember exactly what I wrote but it was along the lines of the chance to see other peoples work, and interact with other photographers of all skill levels.

So long story short I received an email two days ago letting me know that the judges had picked my answer as the best and I had won a Canon EOS 500D Single Lens Kit. So this means that (just because I can) I will most likely be doing a review of the EOS 500D in the not too distant future as well. So I just wanted to throw out a big thanks to Canon for not only providing me the opportunity to begin my journey into photography but also fueling my desire to learn more and try new things while providing me the opportunity to do so.

Anyhoo just thought I would provide an update I have loads of ideas and will have the time to put them into writing later this week after I am back from holidays.

The first chance I had was with a friend who offered herself as a model for the day in which we both went down to Manly Beach to take some photos. I managed to learn some key lessons on this first outing which included:

1. Prior to a shoot, take the time to really plan some ideal shots that you would like to get
2. In the initial planning stages ensure you take into account the terrain of a location, crawling over rocks is not always comfortable and/or easy with camera gear
3. If working with a person that has never modeled before, give them a briefing before hand of what you are going to do/try to achieve as it is better that they have a rough idea than to dump them in the deep end

Having said that, it was a great first experience and it showed me that I have a lot to learn, especially surrounding the composition of the photo and how the model should pose within the shot. Granted it was a first attempt but I look forward to giving it another go soon.

Then today I had another opportunity to do group shots at a work Social Club Christmas Party. It was a rather interesting experience in which I kept the camera in auto mode virtually the entire day. My reasoning was that I needed to get comfortable getting people to pose and get the actual photos prior to attempting to do artsy photos on the fly. All in all I feel that it went quite well, I was able to get some really good photos and had my first real experience using the flash on the camera. After using it a bit I honestly think (nay KNOW) that I need to get my hands on a decent diffuser, a lot of the photos worked well bouncing the light off the roof but some I feel needed a direct diffuser to really get the lighting correct.

After having a look back through my photos I feel that today I was far more comfortable turning the camera on the side to get a decent profile shot rather than always leaving the camera in landscape mode. I think this is something that I have struggled with in the past but it seems that today this came really quite naturally.

Anyhoo, that is enough of a brain dump for now, I am going to pick out a few individual photos and ask the staff members if they would mind me using them on the blog then hopefully I can analyse them in detail.

Two Choices – Author Unknown:

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: ‘When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?’

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. ‘I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.’

Then he told the following story:

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, ‘Do you think they’ll let me play?’ Shay’s father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

Shay’s father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, ‘We’re losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we’ll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.’

Shay struggled over to the team’s bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father’s joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay’s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay’s team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn’t even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay’s life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman’s head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, ‘Shay, run to first! Run to first!’ Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, ‘Run to second, run to second!’ Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball … The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher’s intentions. So he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman’s head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, ‘Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay’

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, ‘Run to third! Shay, run to third!’

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, ‘Shay, run home! Run home!’ Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

‘That day’, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, ‘the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world’.

Shay didn’t make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate. The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

I got out my trusty camera and decided to take some photos. The only way I can describe the dust storm was eerie. I have never in my life seen Sydney blanketed in such a way.

After pondering for a while I decided that some old abandoned industrial estates would be a great place to do this. However not being one for illegally trespassing, my girlfriend managed to discover Cockatoo Island in the heart of Sydney. Essentially Cockatoo Island is abandoned industrial estate, for the most part it is accessible, there are some areas that have been blocked off to public access as they are extremely unsafe, therefore I chose to steer clear of such areas.

I came out with the following photos which I thought would look great in black and white (or in some cases sepia). These are just a few selections, the full black and white gallery has some additional photos in it and in some cases different angles of the same subject.

This first photo I found to be really quite catching, it almost looks as though it was taken 30 or 40 years ago. Generally I do like to keep my subject matter simple, however in this case I thought that the additional industrial background added to the effect of the image.

This second set of shots were of what I could only describe as an antique electrical breakout bay and the electrical switch boxes and fuse boxes. Although these did not really work well with colour, I found once I converted them to black and white the contrast in the wood and cables really came out and gave the pictures additional character.

And this brings me to the final shots which were my favourite of the day.

I loved these shots as it really showed a part of the island that has been left seemingly untouched for a long time. Although these images seemed slightly depressing I did love the character that these images seemed to have.

All in all I enjoyed discovering the benefits that can come with black and white photography and the fact that shadows and contrasts become so much more important than when using a colour image.

I do welcome any feedback and once again you can see the full black and white gallery for more of the photos where you can also leave comments on each of the photos if you desire. I will get the full image sets up at some point in the near future (including those in colour).

A lot of these photos were very technical based shots and therefore lacked any elegance… however this the reason I wanted to share them. After going on this excursion and then seeing the photos side by side, I found that the overall picture of how shutter speed affects a photo being taken became far clearer.

Essentially from what I have learned, shutter speed (also known as exposure time) controls the effect of how quickly a moment is captured in time. For example, the higher the shutter speed, the quicker the moment is captured. The easiest way I have found to remember this is that if you take a photo of a fountain with an extremely high shutter speed you will be able to see each individual droplet caught in time, however on a slower shutter speed you would tend to see the flowing effect of the water rather than individual droplets.

So lets go through a few examples (click on any image to expand it):

This photo has the following technical specs (so to speak):

Camera: Canon EOS 50D
Exposure Time: 0.004s (1/250)
Aperture : f/9.0
ISO: 800
Focal Length: 56mm (89.6mm in 35mm)

Note the exposure time (shutter speed) for this photo is 1/250th of a second, which is known as a fast(ish) shutter speed. If you take a look at the photo you will notice that all the cars are in focus including the blue car in the foreground which was moving at the time.

The technical specs for this second shot are:

Camera: Canon EOS 50D
Exposure Time: 0.0166s (1/60)
Aperture: f/16.0
ISO: 800
Focal Length” 56mm (89.6mm in 35mm)

In this photo the exposure time has been dropped to 1/60th of a second and you can see that all the cars in the background remain in sharp focus as they are not moving. However the red car in the foreground has begun to become blurred due to the movement of the car and the lower shutter speed.

As we take this to the other extreme of the scale we begin to get significant blurring on moving objects as you will see in this final image.

ISO: 320
Focal Length: 56mm (89.6mm in 35mm)

This image was taken with an exposure time of only a quarter of a second which meant that the car had time to move across the field of vision in between the time that the shutter opened and closed and this is what causes the blurring.

You may have also noticed that the Aperture was raised incrementally in line with the lowering shutter speed, this is due to the direct relationship between the aperture and exposure time (or shutter speed if you prefer). I will however cover this at a later time.

If you want you can see even further increments in between the ones I have placed above which I have placed in my Eccentric Reality gallery and they are on pages one and two at the link above.

As a final note I wanted to provide one slightly more practical example which I mentioned above and that has assisted me in remembering how shutter speed affects a photograph. If you take a look at this photo you will see the effect that I mentioned earlier in regards to freezing a droplet of water in time. Had a lower shutter speed been used the water would have simply looked like it was flowing or in other words, more blurry.

I have two major achievements that I would like to show you from the last week and a half. The first is this shot of a Rainbow Lorrikete.

There are a heap of these little critters that hang around on a tree not far from my balcony and so last weekend I decided to get out and snap some shots. This was the best one of the lot (I personally feel anyhoo) and the colours and vibrancy of the shot really made me proud of it. If you are interested the full gallery of the Rainbow Lorikeets can be seen here.

The rest of these shots are from an outing that I took on Friday to Manly Beach (Sydney, NSW, Australia). There are several different galleries that I have set up from the one shoot so I thought that I would pick the best photo from each to show you.

The first gallery is the Sneaky Lizard gallery. Nearing the end of my expedition I stopped for a rest on a bench overlooking Manly beach and after a few minutes heard a rustle behind me. I turned around to see this little critter hiding there.

He (it) actually seemed really tame and I was able to get quite close up, however at the time I was still using my 70-300IS lens as I did not want to miss the shots while changing lenses. I was able to get some really great shots so would recommend a visit to this gallery.

The next gallery up is the Oz Jetboating Gallery, now I actually did not go on this, but while I was out on the ferry on Sydney Harbour they circled around us a couple of times so I was able to get some great shots.

I really liked this photo because of the brilliant spray of water that came out from one side of the boat, it almost looked like the spray from a waterfall and I felt it just captured the moment in time really well.

The last gallery that I will pull a photo from is the Seagull Gallery, now while I know that the good old seagull is not the most elegant of all the bird family, they are a great start for a budding photographer.

I really liked this shot because of the contrast between the dark green trees and the blue sky and then again between the dark green tree and the white of the seagull. Unfortunately when this image is blown up to full size the seagull is a tad out of focus but on these smaller images it is not noticeable.

Finally there are two more galleries that you might be interested in checking out, Manly Beach Shots contains some great stills of water breaking over the rocks and the beach as a whole while Sydney Harbour Shots contains a lot of great images of the harbour when I was going to and from Manly on the ferry.

I also had my first photography class last week which was a real eye opener and has answered a lot of my questions that I have been wondering and there is still another 6 weeks to go. The tutor is bubbly and managed to keep all the content interesting and lively, even while going through the history of cameras and photography.

Our homework this week was to chose one or two of our favourite photos that we had taken at some point in our lives and bring them along to class next week. I am getting a couple of photos printed up at the moment so I will see how they come out. [EDIT] If you would like to see my homework that I have completed for this week with a short description I have put it up in my online gallery.

For now tho, I thought I would share photos of the new hardware with you.

I have to say that I am really getting into photography and I hope that I will gain some (much needed) skills from the course which runs over seven weeks (a few hours a week). I have tried to read a photography book but found the language to be just as confuzzling as it was before I began reading so perhaps I can revisit that throughout the course.

Keep your eyes peeled, I hope to have my first thoughts of the course up on Thursday but it is my birthday on Wednesday so I am pretty busy over the next few days (but will try my best).

Anyhoo, I came across these two photos in my adventures taken in 2003. I think they would be the first real evidence of the itch that I had for wanting to explore photography.

These were both taken with my first digital camera, a Kodak LS753 if I remember correctly. And they were just taken while I was out and about (I used to carry the camera with me quite a fair bit).

Anyhoo, I guess I just wanted to share this interesting discovery from my past that I guess defines me a little bit more. What would be the first photo you took that got you thinking that photography could be good fun for you?

So I am wondering, what photo(s) have you always wanted to capture but never had the opportunity? Are there any photos that you would travel around the world just to capture to chase that moment?

I am new to photography (as you all know) and so I guess I have not really had the opportunity to explore the photos that I wish to capture however I would *love* to be able to travel to Egypt and capture pictures of the elegant pyramids.

Anyhoo, I am curious to hear your thoughts, whether you are an amateur or a professional do tell!

I have spent a lot of the last 48 hours working on getting my new gallery all set up customising the SmugMug templates, in turn I have some exciting news. The Eccentric Reality Gallery & Portfolio is now online using SmugMug and ready for everyone to have a look. I have even got a gallery up which has some photos from Taronga Zoo in Sydney that you might enjoy (and that are displaying in the below slideshow.

I really would welcome any feedback about the design, I have tried to match it as closely as possible to this (there are some very minor differences).

Let me know if you have any thoughts (and I welcome any critisism in the gallery as well, you can easily leave comments there too ).

I have been hunting around for somewhere that I can host my photography works (and also do a little e-commerce as well, such as selling digital downloads of my photos), while at the same time integrating with Adobe Lightroom (to make my life easy).

After playing around with SmugMug.com for a few days I have made my pick. Although it is a little expensive, I have managed to get my hands on a 50% off code so that is a massive bonus as well because I can now get a Pro account at a pretty decent price.

Anyhoo, if you are interested in somewhere that can host your images with a LOT of great features (most importantly… Adobe Lightroom Integration), SmugMug is my current pick.

If you think you might get an account and want to help me pay for my new digital camera, there are SmugMug ads that will display at the bottom of this site every so often, if not, tis all good. But as that is not the aim of this post I am not going to throw an affiliate link in (unless you guys really ask me to).

Anyhoo, has anyone else used SmugMug? I am rather curious, if not, what do you use for your photo hosting (professional or otherwise)?

After buying both the packages, and another trip to the store to get a bigger hard drive for my laptop (*hehe*) I was able to install both and start getting my hands dirty.

The main topic I wanted to cover in this post is actually Adobe Lightroom 2, however thought that I would mention Adobe CS 4 as the integration between Lightroom and Photoshop is nothing short of spectacular.

After installing Lightroom and importing all my photos (which is a little over 31, 000 photos at this stage but I started with around 34, 000) I started to get to work actually looking through some of my historical shots.

I have spent the last day going through and starting to organise everything into folders as well as adding meta data such as keywords to each of the photos. I have to say that the ability to search my images by meta data will be a godsend. There have been so many times in the past that I have wanted to find a photo but could not find it at all due to it being hidden in the deep dark recesses of my hard drive that I am now coming across (and appropriately tagging) before moving into meaningful folders.

I am also finding that I am no longer going to the Windows “My Pictures” folder to find things, I am now just going straight to Adobe Lightroom as it is just so much easier to find in Lightroom (and the interface appears to be faster than explorer for most things too).

Back to the integration, when I wish to edit an image, I can make adjustments to the post-production exposure settings and such and then export straight to Adobe Photoshop for further edititing. It is just so easy to move back and forth between the two it really does feel like heaven.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to say that if you are starting out in Photography, the CS 4 suite (I got CS 4 Web Premium but whichever suits your needs will be fine) and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom are an absoulute must.

I look forward to hearing other people’s thoughts, do you use the Adobe Suites or something else?

One such animal is the good old seagull. I have found that the seagull is one animal that can be photographed with ease, this could be their sweet nature (ahem… yea right!) or the fact that there are just so many of them around and you can get up quite close to them.

While I was away in Merimbula I took the photo that you see to the left and the second photo below (which is one of my favourites). As there were so many seagulls around and the other aforementioned factors I was able to get up close to them and greatly increase my chances of getting some great photos.

I found that because they are so timid, I could sit there just constantly taking photos, playing with settings and changing everything around to really have a good play with the cameras settings and features.

This of course was great for a noob photographer (i.e. yours truly) and while I have not yet had the chance to learn a lot about the intricacies of photography, I think that the seagull will probably be a regular guest in my photography during the learning stages.

Now onto one of my favourite seagull photos. I have dubbed the photo below “The Inquisitive Seagull”, I managed to take this shot just as the seagull dipped it’s head and it came out with a really interesting look on its face so to speak hence it looks rather inquisitive.

So please, let me know your thoughts on these couple of photos, as always I am very much open to constructive criticism. Also what animals have you found the easiest to take photos of? Whether you are a budding photographer or a professional I would love to hear your thoughts.

While I was at the Meerkat enclosure I managed to snap the beauty below. Even as I look back at it now I realise that a lot of photography (especially when referring to wildlife) is pure timing.

Just as I was about to head away I saw this Meerkat poke his head out of the tree log and then proceed to roll around into the “Chillaxing” position below. I have to say it was one of my favourite photos of the day.

Anyhoo, just wanted to show this one off as it does look rather cute and funny but at the same time wanted to play a bit of a game. If you are bored and have a couple of minutes free, have a look at provide a caption for the image. It could be for example what the Meerkat might be thinking.

For example I thought that perhaps an appropriate caption would be “Ahh the only thing that would make this afternoon better is a beer”.

Be creative, have a bit of fun with it. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

As I still had the Canon EOS 1000D with me while I was away on holidays I was able to take lots and lots of photos (and Erin, my girlfriend, took the one of me with the goofy look on my face that you see to the left).

Now I have been taking the time to go through them, one by one, picking out the good ones and deleting the bad ones. There was a little over 14 gigabytes of photos that Erin and I took collectively.

So I guess I am wondering. How does everyone else seem to deal with this conundrum? As I see myself getting into photography very deeply in the near future I find myself pondering the interesting question. Taking photos is one thing, but then how much time does it take to sift through them and find those perfect photos?

So I have decided that it would be appropriate to have this savings goal metre on the site to show just how close i am to getting my goal.

Granted at the moment I am only at 4.75% of the total cost but after a couple more paychecks I hope to raise that bar up a lot. I will update this as often as I can when I throw some more savings in (it is *unfortunately* not that easy as I have to re-create the image each time).

So now marks the beginning, it is one month exactly today that I hope to order my camera… can I save the money in time? We will see.

In the mean time however, tell me… What was the last big purchase you saved up for and how did it feel when you finally got your hands on it?

So after flicking through a few photos I settled on this one which was a Park Bench by Merimbula lake:

Ricktas of the AusPhotography forums was kind enough to give me the following feedback “hmmm. I think you have a great shot here, though the distant horizon at the top looks cluttered. Crop the top off, just above the darker blue line, clone out the yellow blob top left, to simplify it and it improves a lot.”

Although have never really been a guru with editing photos, I pulled together what skills I had and came up with a revised edition of the same photo:

Looking at the photo I now see that Ricktas hit it on the head like a nail. The photo looks so much more simplified without the extra clutter on top and I think it looks more pleasing (please tell me your thoughts).

I have learned a couple of things from this that I will keep in mind for next time. Firstly, I really need to focus on the composition of my images as I take them. Up until now I have always pretty much just kept my eye on the centre of the image, rather than really looking around the whole frame and seeing if I can cut parts out that may not belong, or clutter up the image.

The other lesson that I picked up is that some photos will (by their nature) require editing post production to touch them up and really give them their added flare. This was something that I had not considered before, I thought I could just take a great photo and that was that.

I want to also say a big thank you to Ricktas for his awesome advice, and now I hand over to you, what do you think of each image (the original and the remake). I am always open to constructive criticism and hey… I am still learning too.

Welcome one and all to my new blog, Eccentric Reality. For a long time I had an interest in photography that I was not able to pursue.

After blogging on SecludedHabitat.com for a little over 12 months, I was contacted out of the blue by Canon Australia who had recently begun the Blogger Product Review Program. The general idea behind the program is to allow selected Australian bloggers to trial and review Canon products.

Canon proceeded to lend me an EOS 1000D Digital SLR camera. Very early on in the three months that I had the camera, I fell in love. I discovered my passion for photography and the wonder of having a creative outlet in which I could express myself.

Out of all this, Eccentric Reality was born. I thought that using photography I could essentially capture the eccentric reality that is any picture perfect moment.

Sadly, in the very near future the Canon camera will be on its way back. Until I can figure out how I will be getting a camera of my very own, I will use this blog to go through my experiences thus far and showcase some of my early photos.
